CIF PLAYOFF

Long Beach Wilson

25-14 25-17 26-24 lost in 3

After a two and a half hour trip from Ventura County, the boys arrived at Wilson High School.  The gym was a throw bacj to a bygone era with wide benchseat wooden bleachers in a loft for the visitors.  With shirts hanging on a wall from Wilson players who became professional volleyball players, our players seemed a little intimidated as they entered the gym.  The Wilson fans began to fill in the near bleachers to support their 1st team finishers in the very tough Moore League.  But Newbury Park was not to be outdone.  The visitor bleacher side bleachers began to swell with both family, fans and students from NP.

With the addition of Michael Burns and Royce Wells to the Varsity squad the boys took center stage.  The LB Wilson players didn't disappoint in the first game as our team tried to shack off the bus lag.  Travis Zeller consistently got big hits on the outside.  Again our boys never seemed to get the calls to go our way.  After a lengthy delay in the game by the Wilson sidelines, Coach Jorge picked up a very quick yellow card (does that make sense).  The inevitable red card came a short time later when the double calls against the Panthers got a little tight.

On the second game the boys started to relax and the defense started to play a little more relaxed.   We saw some great rallies as the back row fought to keep the ball off the wood. Hard hitting by Brady Johnson and Stephen Santos in the middle kept the game close.  Blocking at the net got better as Trevor Willenberg had a big block.  Mickey Kelleher skyed over the net and rocketed the ball back at the Wilson hitter.

Game three started with Travis back at his middle blocker position and Micah Snith moved to outside.  Kevin Alvarez had a stand out game as he made great passes to Colby Cameron and made some tough digs off of some hard hit balls.  Colby showed a little bit of his athleticism as he jumped straight up and stuck his arm horizontally over the net, up to his arm pit. Mickey made a pair of one handed digs to keep the ball in play.  The Panthers led game three up to the 22 point mark but came up just a couple of points short.  As a fan in the bleachers, it was one of the best games the boys have played all year and we were proud of the boys spirit.

This will be this writer's last article and I would like to first thank the fans who showed up to support the Panthers.  This year's turn out was the best I have seen in 4 years and it makes a difference in the spirit of the team.  Second to the coaching staff who gave so much of their time and love of the game to the boys.    And finally to the boys who played so hard all year.  Great memories for life.

The Varsity squad just didn't have the spark tonight.  It seems all the wheels on this bus were wobbling as it travelled through the match.  Quite possibly the boys were saving themselves for next weeks CIF playoffs or maybe the long season was wearing on them.  All the fans are hoping that the boys who played Simi show up next week.

JV Lost in 3

It seems the fans and the terrible towls had a little more spark than the JV squad.  Like the Varsity, they just didn't have the flame that they carried throughout the season.   The team has really built a strong foundation for next years Varisty.  If the boys can continue to play together as they did throughout the season, 2009 will be a great success.

The Frosh Sopph squad looked like a well oiled machine tonight.  In some fantastic rallies they always seemed to dig ddep and come out with that extra push for the point.  In the second game the Panthers found themselves down 18-9 with everything going against them.  Suddenly the boys came alive and started scoring points.  With the Panther fans jumping out of their seats, the Panthers caught up and then passed the Lions to win the match.  This was a great way to finish out an exciting season.

The Panthers came to the dimly lit Calabasas Gym with hopes of an easy match.  The much improved Coyotes were not about to be walked over.  In three hotly contested games, the panthers came out with the win.  Jonathon Ramirez serice was on, with screeching serves just over the net.  One of the high points of the night was Austin Kebely's back filp for the cheering crowd.

The terrible towels invaded Lancer Gym but it wasn't enough to lift the boys for a victory.  The gym was stifling hot and seemed to take some wind out of the Panther squad.  The match started out with a thunderous hit by Travis Zeller.  Mickey Kelleher followed up with a huge roof for a side out.  Mickey led the Panthers with 4 blocks on the night.  The Panthers led the entire first game until they got to 21 points and suddenly the points stopped coming.

The boys fell way behind in the second game as a tough jump serve seemed to freeze our back court.  Suddenly the boys woke up and decided that they wouldn't go down quietly.  The momentum swung in favor of the Panthers but we were just too far behind to catch all the way up. Travis continued to pound the ball and finished with 10 kills.  Micah Smith moved back to defense and posted 8 digs without an error.  Colby Cameron's serving game has finally hit high gear.  His jump serve was flawless tonight.  Colby led the team with 2 aces.

The boys looked tired in game 3.  Of course Trevor Willenberg's energy was still on overdrive.  Trevor finished with 10 kills for the night with 20 passes.  As usual Trevor was throwing his body all over the court and keeping the ball in play.  Jonathon Ramirez actually had a D-ball set to him.  We were all expecting a flying, top spin spike for the point.  Next time Jonathon.

Stephen Santos re-established himself as the middle of the future by making some heads up plays at the net and was able to steal some points from the Lancers.  Stephen finished with 4 kills for the night.  Brady Johnson had a huge night.   The Lancers had 5 inches on Brady that meant nothing as he made 3 bigs blocks and 7 kills.  Kevin Alvarez had a flawless night at the serving line and led the team with 7 digs.  I hope that the reffing improves when we get to CIF.

JV 25-6 25-22 Won in 2

The JV's just continue to steamroll through the Marmonte League.  The first game the boys looked flawless.  David Reaves was on fire tonight both in blocking and in hitting.  He even made a great play on an over set, stuffing the ball back down on the Lancer hitter.  Matt Jeske lead the Panthers with 6 kills  He continues to improve every week.  Nick Wargnier was still a bit under the weather and only played front row.  James Kataily stepped in and filled in for the back row posting 3 digs.  Stephen Tobias had a great night with 6 digs. With great passing Royce wells was able to pass the ball all over the court and allow the hitters to pick the defense apart.

Once again the JV showed off some great rallies as they would flawlessly pass, set, spike.  Michael Burns even lifted a defender off his feet when he popped the ball into the back row defender for a point.

Frosh/Soph Lost in 3

Coach Tim reports that the Panthers came out of the gates  sluggish and couldn't quite find what they needed to beat the Lancers.  They showed signs of life by taking the second game and gained momentum.  He attributes their loss to the gym's humidity and spiking errors.

One noteworthy play of the match was Sean Garry's thunderous spike, which sent a dazed T.O. player to the bench, asking for a much needed substitution.  Alex Ostrovsky recorded two aces, Matt Bonnfiglio also earned two.  Sean Garry and Andrew Comeaux both finished with four blocks.  Chris Royalty and Daniel Sipsia led the team in kills.

Our last home game of the season brought a big crowd out to Panther Gym ready to cheer the boys on to victory.  The gym was adorned with fresh posters from the associated student body which helped to pump up the boys spirits.  With CIF playoffs standing in the balance, the Varsity squad really came together tonight as a single minded jugernaut.  The game started with Colby Cameron setting a perfect X to Mickey Kelleher for a quick kill.  Colby really showed that he can spread the ball around as Mickey and Travis Zeller both finished with 14 kills and Trevor Willenberg finished with 15.  Colby finished the night with 41 assists.  The passing from the backrow was flawless as Kevin Alvarez and Trevor combined for 40 passes with only one error(is that even possible). Jonathon again gave a rock solid performance on the court.  He was a threat all over the court with a serving ace and a dramatic kill.  After a hard spike and a tip the ball was  heading for a Pioneer point when Jonathon chased the ball down, five feet past the back line, and fired it over his head back into the court.  The ball tipped the top of the net and dropped in for the Kill.  Brady Johnson gave a power performance at middle. Posting great numbers with 2 blocks, 6 kills and a flawless night from the serving line.  The Pioneer's pinned all of their hopes on their middleblocker to save the day.  Travis told Coach Jorge that he could handle him.  Travis entered the third game back to his beloved middleblocker position.  The Pioneers found out that the middle gate had just been shut as Travis slammed the first Pioneer set back down on them.  That was Travis' first of 6 blocks for the night.  Micah came off the bench to play outside and had his best match of the year.  He showed that he can pop the ball both angle and down the line with power.  Trevor was back in form, leading the team in kills and passes.  Trevor showed his heart for the team as he dove for a ball out of play and slid an additional ten feet into the players bench.  Mickey had his best match of the year as he completed fourteen kills in a row without an error and shut down the outside with four blocks. An overpass  was heading for an easy Pioneer spike when Mickey recognized the  errant pass and decided to meet the Simi hitter with both hands.  A loud double thump was heard as the ball careened off of Mickey's hands and onto the Pioneer's court. Stephen Santos had a solid day.  Although he didn't post the big numbers, it is obvious that he will dominate the league's middles for the next two years.

JV 25-23 25-16 Won in 2

With Nick Warnier out for the night, sick, the JV squad had to step up and figure a new way to win.  The entire team played at a new level.  Harrison Ang led the team with 7 kills.  Michael Burns had a great night.  He was really putting snap on the ball as he finished with 5 kills.    Matt Jeske shut down the Pioneer squad with some huge blocks.  Austin Kebley and Steven Tobias were all over the floor assuring that the ball never touched wood.  Royce Wells had a great night at setting.   He again showed his versatility as he had an ace serving and 5 digs.  The entire squad chipped in for some exciting rallies that usually ended with a point for the Panthers.

Frosh/Soph 25/XX 25/23 Won in 2

Coach Tim's team just seems to keep wining.  The Comeaux brothers were solid with Andrew pounding the ball at the net and Jacob making great passes.  Alex Ostrovsky and Matt Bonfiglio made the hitting easy with great sets, all night long.  With the second game on the line, Dan Dipsia came to the line and served an ace.  The squad has really improved and it is looking as if the future of Panther volleyball is in good hands.

Coach Jorge reported, "Travis was unstoppable, he hit over 500.  He saved us.  At the net Santos and Brady played great games both, blocking for Santos and hitting for Brady.  I thought that Brady had his best overall Match.  Trevor did everything well.  He came through for us in the clutch.  He played just great.  Mickey came up with a solo block in the the 5th game that changed the momentum of that game.  We really needed that block.  Kevin passed great and was all over the court.  He has become the libero I'd hoped he would.  I am very proud of him.  John fought through some hard moments but came through in the end with some key digs and some great serving, he even had a hit out of the back row.  Micah played well, diving for balls and passing real well.  A great team effort.  Colby was awesome at the net: blocking, dumping the ball and setting a great game.  He truely brought our effort together and that got us the win.  I was delighted at a great dive for the ball, that is right a dive which coincides with the leap year."  Zeller 18 kills, Willenberg 13 kills.  Kelleher, Cameron, Johnson 4 blocks each

It was a tough night for the Panthers as they traveled to Agoura for their second away game in a row.  The first game started off well with the scored tied at 13 when Agoura ran 8 points in a row.  Our boys fought hard but didn't have an answer to Agoura's tipping and serving.  There were some high points for the boys .  Travis Zeller posted a team high 11 kills.  It appears the more frustrated he gets, the higher he jumps. Colby Cameron continues to develop as as a setter and is starting to mix the ball up.  Travis hit a big backrow one and the X ball seems to have the defense confused at the net.  Stephen Santos had 3 of the team's 5 blocks. The team did fight hard and we saw some great play and some great rallies.  Our boys will really need the fan support and turnout next week as we face Westlake in our third away game in a row.  Coach Jorge showed great composure by only getting a yellow card during questionable call.

JV 25-16 20-25 15-5 won in 3

The JV team has started to come together as a single unit.  Royce Wells returned to his setter position and all the boys seemed to fold together as a team.  Matt Jeske and David Reaves both had big blocks.  Nick Warnier led the team with 8 kills but Harrison Ang and Jack Lecka and Matt all had big hits for multiple kills.  The boys easily won the first game and were steaming full ahead during the second game when a scoring error seemed to sink the ship.  The boys became a little flustered and lost the second game with numerous errors.  Coach Glenn was able to give a strong pep talk and got them focused.  The boys walked out for the third game focused . After a big block by Matt and a hard dump by Royce, the boys were up 10-3.  Agoura called a time out but the boys quickly sailed to an easy victory.

With Coach Jorge trapped at work, Coach Glenn took the helm of the varsity squad against a young Moorpark squad.  The Panther squad was a bit taller then their adversaries and that made a difference at the net.  Mickey Kelleher finished with a season high 5 blocks with Travis Zeller right behind him with 4 blocks.  Brady Johnson  sprained his ankle during practice which really hindered his jumping tonight. Even though he only saw action during  the first two games, he still finished with 4 kills for the night.  Coach Glenn decided to keep the team fresh by challenging them with a different starting rotation for the second game.  The boys adapted well. Travis stepped up, hitting 3 serves in a row to start game 2.  Stephen Santos showed that he can play defense by making 3 digs.  Travis started out slow in game one but got fired up during the second and third game by pounding the ball into the wood for 8 kills.  Mickey had a breakout game with 9 kills.  He finally got a chance to hit the X ball.  Colby Cameron seemed to have fun at the net by making 6 kills from the setter position while making 22 assists.  Micah Smith started the third game and had a strong night from the serving line.  Micah also made 10 passes and 1 dig from the back court.  Jonathon Ramirez worked hard on defense making great passes and a suspicious pancake.  At least we finally had a call go our way.  Trevor Willenberg, as usual, led the team in kills with 11.  His jump serve was on tonight as he served up 2 aces.  His excitement was almost contagious as he tried to coax his team into playing every ball, no matter how far out of the court it was.  All in all, Coach Glenn was happy with the play of the boys and happy to get out of Moorpark in 3 games.

It is always interesting playing in the close confines of the SVHS stadium.  The ball often careens off of the ceiling sending the players diving. The Panthers started the match one point up when Simi received a double red card prior to the start of the game one.  The first game started out in a see saw battle between the teams.  During a key rally, one of Pioneers powered a spike towards the ten foot line.  Kevin Alvarez dove and was able to pancake the ball back up for one of his 44 digs of the night.  The Panthers put the ball away and kept putting the points on the board.  Stephen Santos had several big blocks up in the middle.  Colby Cameron also had a big roof, finishing with 7 blocks for the night.    Trevor Willenberg showed the Pioneers that he could make adjustments to his hitting angles while in the air.

The boys looked flat at the beginning of game 2, letting Simi lead 9-18.  Suddenly our passing started to kick in.  Again Stephen and Colby had some key blocks and Travis Zeller began rocketing the ball in for points.  Travis  was sporting a new look to intimidate the Pioneers.  Trevor stepped up to the line and had five serves in a row.  Mickey Kelleher nearly went through the players bench as he brought a ball back into play.  Although the boys lost, they went down playing hard.

The Panthers rebounded back in game three.  Jonathon stepped up to the line and made six serves in a row in, including an ace.  Micah Smith came in to help out the defense and made some great passes .  Brady made two big blocks in a row and was rewarded with a Hug from Coach Jorge when he exited the court.

The Fourth and final game was a battle that saw the lead pass back and forth 16 times.  Kevin's jumper was working as he made four serves in a row.  Brady and Stephen began to dominate the middle.  Both teams played with a lot of heart, as hit after hit was dug and each and every point was hard fought.  Colby finished the night with 32 assists.  Stephen had 9 kills and Trevor had 16.

With the third and last game of their home stand, the Panthers hoped to even up their season at 2-2.  The boys came out strong in the first game but ran up against a strong Westlake middleblocker who seemed to hit at will.  Brady Johnson decided that he had enough of that and shut the hitter down three consecutive ROOFS to send a message, "not at my net!"  The Warriors then tried to send the ball outside where Mickey Kelleher DOMED the outside hitter.  That set the tempo for the first two games as they easily took the first two games.  The boys then seemed to relax and coast for the next two games, and let Westlake back into the match.  When the the final game was on the line, Colby Cameron came up with some key serves and the boys finished off the Warriors.

Our Defense was the most improved part of our game.  Kevin Alvarez and Jonathon Ramirez really stepped up.  Kevin finished with 34 digs.  The tandem of Willenberg and Zeller put on an air show, pounding the ball.  Trevor finished with 21 kills and Travis had 20.  Brady posted 7 big blocks while Mickey had 5.   Jonathon finished with 4 aces. Coach Jorge said that he lost 7 years of his life during match (we are hoping only dog years) .

VARSITY 23-25 21-25 23-25 lost in 3

Our second home game of the league season brought a tough loss to cross town rival Agoura H.S.  Looking to switch things, replaced the 6-2 offense with a 5-1 offense.  Moving Mickey Kelleher to Opposite and making Colby Cameron the full time setter.

Notable Players for the match were Travis Zeller who had a team high 15 kills.  Steven Santos led the team in blocks with four blocks. Brady Johnson did an exceptional job hitting out of the middle with 6 kills and 3 blocks.  The team seemed to be getting down when suddenly Travis brought the team to life with his flapping bird wing celebration following a big spike. The season is young and we continue to improve in the hopes of making CIF playoffs.

VARSITY 25-16, 25-19,18-25,23-25,11-15

It was a tough night for the Panthers.  The boys started out great with two quick wins against the solid ACHS squad, but suddenly the wheels came off.  With only one win away from sealing the match, we dropped three games in a row.  All of our boys played solid and they produced a lot of exciting moments.

Stephen Santos gave another solid night.  Nearly every time he touched the ball, it was a kill.  Micah Smith did a great job off the bench, providing great serves and solid defense.   Mickey Kelleher made some phenomenal digs to keep the ball up and in play, even once, making a one hand set from his knees to Trevor Willenberg.  Trevor made some smart kills, frustrating the ACHS defense with some accurate tips.

Coach Jorge has done a great job with the guys in reinforcing character.  Although they lost the match, they conducted themselves in a mature and professional manner.

High Stats Willenberg 19 kills, Kelleher 12 kills, Zeller 12 kills, Alvarez 11 dig, Cameron 31 assists, Kelleher 26 assists

JV Our JV squad also had a tough night with ACHS.  Although we lost in two, the team continues to improve and show moments of brilliance.  Royce Wells again gave a stellar performance at the setter position.  Nick Warginer pounded the balls from his outside position.  David Reaves and Jack Lecka split time at the middle blocker position.  Both David and Jack made some key kills and strong blocks during the match.  Coach Glenn changed up a few rotations to challenge the boys and to try a few things out before the season started.   He has done a great job making these players into a team.

Frosh/Soph The Frosh/Soph was the only team to walk away with the win tonight.  The sibling team of Andrew and Jacob Comeaux (pronounced Komo) really stood out on the court.  They played great, both at the net and in the backfield.  Some stats from the game:Chris Royalty-6 kills, SEan Garry-5 kills and 2 blocks, Jacob Comeaux-3 kills 2 digs, Matt Bonifiglio-17 assists 2 digs, Ryan Wardell- 3 aces 6 digs,, Blake Silver-1 ace 5 digs,, Zack Fowler 2 kills, 1 dig, A.J. MacAurther-1 block 1 kill, Nate Roman-1 block 1 kill, Kevin Baldwin-1 block 1 kill, Alex Ostrovsky-20 assists 2 digs.  Great job Coach Tim!

Dos Pueblos 2-27-08

Thanks to all the parents who made the road trip up to Goleta.  It was great having a cheering section so far from home.  Dos Pueblos has always fielded great teams and this year was no different.

The Frosh/Soph team started the night out putting up a tough fight.  Although they lost 17-25, 18-25 they did have some standout plays.  Matt Bonifiglio and Alex Ostrovsky each had 14 assists.  Sean Garry made several big blocks and Chris Royalty led the team in Kills.  Both Blake Silver and Ryan Wardell  posted 3 digs.

The JV team lost 20-25 and 9-25 against a very tall DPHS team.  Royce wells set great, posting 29 assists.  Brandon Rista and Michael Burns each had 5 kills and Steven Tobias made 6 digs.

The Varsity team stepped onto the floor with only two players who had played their varsity position last year.  Colby Cameron returned to volleyball with 3 big ROOFS and a bunch of kills.  Trevor Willenberg was a double threat in passing the ball and making kills from any point on the floor.  Stephen Santos made his first appearance on the varisty team by making 6 kills from his middle position.  Kevin Alvarez kept the ball in play from all over the court.  It was a tough match and unfortunately we came out a little short of points:14-25,13-25,25-19,16-25.
